Hemorrhoidectomy

A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure performed by a general surgeon to treat severe cases of hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal or anal area that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, a hemorrhoidectomy may be recommended. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia, and the patient is positioned in a way that provides optimal access to the surgical site. Different techniques can be used, including traditional excisional hemorrhoidectomy or more advanced procedures such as stapled hemorrhoidectomy. While a hemorrhoidectomy is an effective treatment for severe hemorrhoids, it is considered a last resort due to the potential for complications and the discomfort associated with the recovery period. Common risks include infection, bleeding, urinary retention, and narrowing of the anal canal. However, with proper surgical technique and post-operative care, most patients experience significant relief from their hemorrhoid symptoms and can resume their daily activities within a few weeks.
